Liverpool and their shirt sponsors Standard Chartered are nearing the end of their deal and The Athletic today reported that the club are already in talks over a new one.

Naturally, a new shirt sponsor is exciting news for any football fan, especially for Liverpool fans who have seen the likes of ‘Carlsberg’ and ‘Candy’ adorn the front of their iconic shirts. But, the report went on to explain that some of the companies the club are speaking to were from the cryptocurrency sector and this prompted a backlash on Twitter. If Liverpool agree to a deal, it would make them the first Premier League club to have a cryptocurrency firm as the main shirt sponsor.

Cryptocurrency, being an unregulated market, has been a sensitive subject in football ever since its introduction into mainstream sports and the tweets show Liverpool fans and football fans alike are hostile to having the name of a crypto company on the front of their shirt.
