Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has agreed to a new deal that will take him to the top three in the list of highest earners at the club, according to Guardian.
Fernandes’ arrival from Sporting Lisbon for £47m has been one of United’s best bits of business in recent years.
Both parties have been in negotiations for a while and only reached an agreement in March. Fernandes’ original contract ended in 2025, with an option to extend by a year. The new deal is seen as a reward for his performances that helped his side finish in the second position in the 2020-21 season and secure Champions League football for the second consecutive season. An announcement of the deal is believed to follow soon.
This season, Fernandes had taken somewhat of a backseat in terms of his positioning, since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo. The 27-year-old has been playing as a no. 10 behind Ronaldo and has 9 goals after 27 games played, compared to his impressive output of 15 at this stage last season.
The Portuguese will join De Gea and Premier League’s highest earner Ronaldo at the top of United’s earning charts. The club were quick to tie up the deal as the search for a permanent manager goes on, with the Old Trafford chiefs certain that the midfielder will be pivotal in the club’s immediate and long-term future.
Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are believed to be favourites to take over from interim manager Ralf Rangnick, but regardless of whoever is at the helm, Fernandes could be expected to play a leading role for United going forward.
