A busy transfer deadline day saw Atletico welcome back a familiar face in Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman had famously left the club for Spanish giants Barcelona in a big-money move during 2019.

Griezmann, who had helped Atletico to a Europa League title in the 2017-18 season, already has an impressive 94 goals in 180 appearances from his previous stint at the club. But, he hasn’t been able to replicate the same performances or numbers for the Catalonia side. 

“FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid have reached an agreement for the loan of Antoine Griezmann for a season with the option of a further season. The Madrid club will pay the player's wages and there is a compulsory permanent transfer clause.” read Barcelona’s official website.

The move could only come about as a result of letting Saul Niguez leave for Chelsea on a loan deal with an option to buy. The Spaniard had found himself further down in the pecking order after Atletico announced the signing of Rodrigo De Paul this summer and the 26-year-old would hope a move to the European champions would help reignite his career.
